CJ WildBird Foods was set up in 1987 on a farm in rural Shropshire by Chris Whittles, a lifelong ornithologist and wildlife enthusiast. Initially researching and providing just a small range of seeds for wild birds, we’ve grown rapidly and are now a world leader in the research, design, development and supply of wild bird and wildlife food and feeding products. We have a wealth of wild bird and wildlife expertise at CJs and have been responsible for a significant number of developments in caring for garden birds and wildlife. Did you know?Ornithologists at CJs have researched wild bird foods through a food development programme that has significantly extended the range of foods available.Over 80 common species of wild birds can now be fed in gardens, compared to just 18 when we started. Our research has helped establish year-round feeding for garden birds with the endorsement of the RSPB.We can now feed birds during the crucial breeding months of spring and early summer, as well as through the winter. We were the first to introduce to the garden many of the wild bird foods that are now taken for granted. Hard to believe, but just 20 years ago foods such as black sunflower seed, sunflower hearts, Nyjer seed and kibbled sunflower hearts were just not on the menu!CJs developed and introduced a new concept in bird feeding – high energy foods such as Sunflower Hearts and Peanut Cakes. This important innovation means that birds can now get straight to the calories they need rather than use valuable time and energy cracking open seeds. This can literally be the difference between life and death for small birds in freezing conditions with only 6 daylight feeding hours available to them.We were the first to sell peanuts with nil-detectable aflatoxin. This ensured that peanuts were safe for birds which previously had been at risk from the toxins produced by this killer mould. We were the first to introduce No Mess foods and ground feeding mixes to the market. We developed the innovative ‘perching ring’ which allows birds to eat from a feeder facing forwards – their natural feeding position. We’ve also used our wildlife expertise to develop specialist food mixes including our Hedgehog Food endorsed by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.

Feeding & Hygiene Tips-The BTO and RSPB recommend wild birds are fed all year round. – Requirements are greater in late autumn and winter when natural resources are in shorter supply. – High energy levels are also needed during spring when birds are busy breeding and raising young. – Birds lose energy maintaining body temperature overnight, so a good breakfast is essential to set them up for the day. – Once you have established a feeding regime dont disappoint them, they will depend on you. – Establish several feeding areas and move them regularly to avoid bacterial build up. – Consider predators when selecting suitable feeding sites, set table and feeder heights accordingly and make sure birds feeding on the ground have a good line of sight. – Store all foods in a cool, dry place. – Be aware that ground feeding stations can attract rodents. Hygiene Tips- Feed little and often. – Replace old or wet food to prevent build up of bacteria or mould, particularly on table and ground feeding stations. – Clean feeding stations regularly with a safe disinfectant. – Always wash your hands after handling bird products. With disappearing habitats and climatic changes the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) both recommend the year-round feeding of garden birds to maintain a healthy and viable flock of native species. Some species like the swift and swallow feed on-the-wing from airborne insects and will never visit your table or bird feeder, but to most others it represents a single source for fuelling their busy lives. They need energy to keep them warm through the long cold winter, during the busy nesting season and whilst raising their young families. Though winters may not be as long or severe now, the shift in seasonal patterns encourage many species to raise more than a single brood per year, and this prolonged breeding period only serves to heighten the need for a continuous food supply. The feeding preferences of most popular native species fall into two basic categories, those that prefer softer foods and feed from the ground, like the Thrush, Blackbird, Robin and Wren, and most others who predominantly feed on seeds. All have their particular favourite foods just as we do, and when you select from the Walter Harrisons Garden Friends range of premium quality mixes you have the choice of those which attract many different species or specially formulated preparations for the more discerning pallet. The range also includes many attractive and tasty Energy Boost treats to supplement the basic diet and encourage even more visitors to your garden, plus a wide selection of quality feeders and accessories. In fact theres everything you need to create your very own nature reserve in your back garden. OtherA comprehensive range of unique mixtures and wholesome single foods for year-round feeding, all of which appeal to the taste buds of the widest range of feeder or table feeding garden birds. If youre looking for variety of colour, song and habit in your garden visitors these tempting foods should be at the top of your list.
